Edited by Maureen Lawrence. Photographs by Catherine Caton and published by Hayloft Publishing Company at £10.
The pieces in this book represent a sample of writing by people living now in the region traversed by Charlotte Deans during her long career as a strolling player. In spite of the lapse of time and the great economic, technological and cultural changes that have reshaped society, the country-side remains the same and many of its people would be at the very least recognisable. It is true that BLAIZE the theatre company, which re-enacted her life story, revisiting the villages, where she herself once played - travelled along metalled roads, where Charlotte had walked on tracks. The present-day players were not harassed by the church, the law or the occasional bandit. Nevertheless it was clear from the audience reception that the region retains something of its unique character: people recognised Charlotte as one of their own. As one of the contributors to this collection remarked there is a grandeur in the landscape that dwarfs human achievement, while at the same time inspiring great human endeavour and nurturing the creative spirit that is the main-spring of every human being. |
