My name is Sally Bohling, and I live in the village of Mungrisdale. I joined the Writers Group in the September of 2001, with the specific aim of trying to write down family history in a creative way. However, under the guidance of our tutor, Angela Locke, I started to write general prose and poetry. Within 6 months of joining the group, I found that the disciplines learnt, the sensitive suggestions and constructive criticism of our tutor, and the varied creativity of fellow students, encouraged me to attempt the poem, Fair Maids of February. |

| SOLWAY HARVEST |
Distorted metal crucifixes,
Arms outstretched in supplication
They seek the wind,
Turning slowly, out of tune-
At odds with each other,
Out of time.
As it sinks below the horizon,
The dying rays of a blood sun
Planish steel blades to rose-
Casting down trembling pink shards,
To dance on broken waves.
Concrete plinths set deep
Vibrate, causing fish to flee,
Leaving ancestral breeding grounds deserted.
Flailing arms slowly scythe the air,
Catching unwary birds within their orbit,
To fall stunned and shredded to the sea.
A farm for our times,
Stretched out across the Firth,
Where white blades cartwheel across the sky,
Or stand askew - becalmed,
Marring the once unbroken vista
Of purple-headed fells.
Set to reap an intermittent wind,
To gather it in and bind it into reluctant megawatts,
It is a navigational peril,
Whose erratic harvest will yield a bitter crop.
