A former southerner, Paula is pleased to have gravitated 300 miles northwards to live in Cumbria, where the lakes provide better walking than the average London street. A varied working life has seen Paula pursue careers in teaching, social work and insurance, as well as a stint as a restaurateur in the Isle of Man. A keen eye for story and a sharp sense of humour characterise her work, which ranges in tone from the darkly memorable short tale A Cumbrian Soldier to the light-hearted poem Camper Van Man. Paula originated the idea for the latest collection of poems from Mungrisdale Writers, dating@60 and other tribulations. Paula has indeed dated at sixty and knows that life provides no straightforward answers. She can be spotted from time to time walking round lakes, looking longingly at border collies and cooking delicious meals for her visitors |

My jowls are a-sagging,
my eyes, they are bagging
and the crow has walked
all around them.
My stomach is fatter,
my ankles are thicker
and everything's moving
on downward.
I've little blue veins
would look better in cheese
packed in plastic,
sell-by-date looming.
BUT, there's a hand on my thigh
going ever so high
and it's really moving
quite quickly.
My head is so light
my heart pumps with fright
my mind it is spinning
I think he is winning
He has wined me and dined me
and been oh so romantic
but now I've a feeling
that something's expected.
Well, I've been here before
when I was much younger
and tauter and fitter
with plenty to offer
And I'm still not sure
how to answer that question
'Do I, or don't I ?' and
'Will he or won't he, respect me?'
While my lips do these kisses
I'm not sure of my wishes.
I'd like to comply
with whatever he's wanting
and go for this moment.
But, if I don't make it,
what then? My heart at sixty,
broken, again.
