Showcase (17 Oct 08)
'racing to Ramsey'
after rounding the buoy we put up sail
in a scarlet sunset the race set away
along came nightfall with a darkening sky
the wind increased white horses danced
thence whisked along by a bloated canvas
we ducked and dived as we tacked and turned
the barometer dropped our pressure raised
that boiling brine then battered the bows
ferocious waves crashed across our decks
and whitened spume capped a raging sea
reefing in sail became the safest way
but the ratchet seized and the boom was stuck
as the diesel engine choked and coughed
we veered round into the driving gale
with the rudder tight we faced its rage
as we repaired the gear to lower the main
with fuel lines cleared and airlocks gone
we motored on in a towering sea
dawn arrived with brightening skies
calmer seas awaited us and soon the sight of land
past a seaweed pier we entered port
but the result was null and void
