Member Profile for Fenella Davis

I was born in Bangkok and brought up in Malaya and the Isle of Man. After spells working in the Ministry of Defence and Harrods, I settled down to a teaching career. Latterly I worked in a prep school in Oxfordshire, teaching most subjects, coaching swimming and occasionally supervising small boys' cricket! In 2001 we moved to the Howgills in East Cumbria and then I discovered time and the stimulation to write. Writing as Fenella Madoc, I have completed two novels. The first has been translated into French under the title La saison des mangoustans, and was published in January 2007 by Presses de la Cite. Set in the Second World War in Malaya and Britain, it is the story of the effect on the marriage of an English couple, in a time of trauma and separation.

Coming home to Cumbria
As a mountain walker and wild swimmer, I draw inspiration from the landscape of this area. The following was written at a Mungrisdale workshop on coming home to Cumbria:

"Travelling up from the south it's that sweep of the M6 after Jct 37, where the Howgills swing into view across the River Lune. The twin tops of Fell Head tumbling towards Sedbergh - Whiteside, The Calf, Bram Rigg - rounded, curvaceous fells, like breasts. In winter the grass is tawny teddy bear fur. In late summer heather purples the slopes of Fell Head Scar. At the year's close bracken, stained brown like sherry, creeps towards the crests. The traffic thins, the spirit lifts, I'm almost home."
