Member Profile for Dorothy Chalk

Dorothy Chalk is a Lancashire lass transplanted to Cumbria after ten years in London (much to her relief) with strong roots here after forty years. The landscape is an inspiration but it is friendship that really nourishes her. Writing is a means of extending that friendship beyond her immediate neighbourhood and keeping family and distant friends aware of her development. She loves playing with words, but it the sound that is most important, reading aloud is a great pleasure

Showcase (21 Mar 05)
Solid Ground
Bedrock; bare, lifeless, lashed by storms;
Water wears runnels, freezes to form cracks,
Fill with gravel and silt
Offering sustenance to seeds

Water flows deeper beside us
Rivulets mingle to dig a channel
Trees tower over the rock
Laying their leaves to feed other plants

Trees grow and decay
Animals grub and graze

Later among scattered stone dwellings
Cement is laid on this riverside level
A tin hut is brought from Carrock Mine
To supply the community with a meeting place

Now a new building rises here for us
Under our feet, a hard-wearing carpet
On a tongue-and-groove smooth floor
Lower the heating elements, the cement base
The foundations, the supporting soil
And underneath the rock from whence we were hewn.
